Purchasing The Correct Adaptor

The below questions may help you determine which adaptor you require from our store.

Is the voltage of the adaptor you are purchasing compatible with your appliance?

Is the amperage of this adaptor compatible with your appliance? Regulated adaptors are suitable for appliances requiring a current equal to or below the rating of the adaptor. Unregulated adaptors may cause a rise in the voltage supplied to your appliance if you are using it for appliances requiring less current than that supplied by the adaptor.

Do you require an AC/AC (AC output) or AC/DC (DC output) adaptor? An AC output is indicated by a wavy line next to the output on the adaptor label, with a DC output indicated by a solid line with a dashed line underneath it.

If you are purchasing a DC output adaptor does the polarity of this adaptor (positive or negative centre) match that of your appliance? Most appliances require a positive centre polarity adaptor. Most of our universal adaptors have a polarity which is switchable between positive and negative centre. Your appliance instructions should state the polarity required. Alternatively a symbol may be displayed next to the jack socket on your appliance showing either + o) - or - (o + for positive and - o) + or + (o - for negative.

Will the jack size be compatible with your appliance? If you are unsure of this then it may be best to purchase one of our universal adaptors. Our universal adaptors come with a selection of jacks which fit the majority of appliances. The jack measurements on our website are of the inner and outer diameter of the barrel.

The Following Electrical Formulae may be useful when selecting the correct adaptor for your appliance

Within an AC or DC Circuit:

Current (Amps) = Wattage / Voltage
Wattage or VA = Current (Amps) x Voltage
Voltage = Wattage / Current (Amps)
